As an interventional cardiologist, a large office of my job is dealing with heart attacks and fixing the blocked arteries that cause them. I ofttimes hear the term "Widowmaker" from patients or their families who want to know if this is the type of eye set on they're dealing with. People ofttimes refer to middle attacks as widow makers inaccurately, which generates a great deal of anxiety. Of class, I don't blame them. No one wants to be dealing with something known as a Widow Maker! In this article, we will briefly review the blood supply to the heart, what happens in a middle assault, and an accurate definition the widow maker middle assail in social club to gain a better agreement of the term the Widow Maker. To understand this better, make sure you also read 'Did That Stent Salvage My Life?' and 'Should I Accept An Aspirin Every Day?'.
There are three arteries that run over the surface of the heart and supply it with blood (see the diagram above.) There is one artery on the right side and two arteries on the left side of the heart. The one on the right is known as the right coronary. On the left side, which is the main side, we accept the left inductive descending (LAD) that runs downwardly the front of the centre and supplies the front and master wall, and then the left circumflex that supplies the side wall. When the main avenue down the front of the heart (LAD) is totally blocked or has a critical blockage, right at the beginning of the vessel, it is known as the Widow Maker. (The medical term for this is a proximal LAD lesion.) No one knows exactly who came up with the term, simply the reason they did is likely that if that artery is blocked right at the beginning of its course, then the whole artery after information technology goes down. This essentially means that the whole front wall of the heart goes downwards. Every bit far every bit heart attacks go, this is a big one, with big consequences if not dealt with appropriately; information technology'due south why nosotros have information technology so seriously.
A heart attack generally occurs when there is a critical blockage in one or more than of the arteries that supply the eye muscle with blood. Within minutes of the disquisitional blockage occurring, the heart muscle stops working, and if blood flow is not restored within minutes to hours, the muscle typically dies. The consequences are often catastrophic. The heart attack may be large enough to lead to sudden death, and, unfortunately, many patients do not make it to infirmary alive. For those that survive and make information technology to hospital, the outlook is certainly improved, but if the blood supply is not restored in a timely way, a scar replaces the once beating heart muscle and the middle is ofttimes irreversibly damaged. The practiced news is that if done in fourth dimension, we can care for these lesions to good event with the use of minimally invasive techniques such as stent placement (run across the diagram below). Scientists are now investigating if this damage tin be reversed by injecting stem cells into the expanse. Also, check out our article on the new disappearing stent.
If you look carefully at the offset picture show at the peak of this article, you lot will find there is an artery on the left side chosen the Left Main Artery. It supplies both the LAD and the Left circumflex, both of the left-sided arteries. Now imagine if that artery went down. It would lead to loss of blood supply to the entire left side (the primary side), the front end wall, and the side wall. As you can imagine, disquisitional blockage of the Left Main coronary avenue is the mother of all Widow Makers! A heart attack caused past this truly drives fear into cardiologists, surgeons, and patients alike, because if that goes down, go figure!
The Widow Maker Video
To help further explain the widowmaker, I created this video. The video includes a thorough caption of the condition equally well as survivability and life expectancy – 2 aspects of the widow maker non covered elsewhere in the article.
